"KEEP AT THE HAWKS."
iTr, the Editor.) Sir.---In an is>ii" of the "Star" dated ; May 25th there is a. letter written by someone who signs himself " Cambridge." I should like to meet the writer and give him a clap on tbe back. There is another enemy worse than the pot-shooter to tiie hen pheasant, and that is the hawk. Nobody can over-estimate the damage these brutes ifo. Here is Waikato fast becoming a roost popular district, and the one thin.: particularly lacking is game, simply because the hawks get every pheasant before they are big | enough to distinguish whether it is a cock or a ben. Now is the time to get Ihe hawk-—food is scarce, and they will soon be nesting. 1 have already paid t.i 10/ for toe destruction of hawks at ;3d. per bead, and the Auckland Acclima- | ti.-ation .Society cannot see. iheir wa3' to even subsidise our subscriptions: but . this will not stop any true sport from assisting u>. I am sure. I have lately .-iccounied for about 40 myself, by poisoning rabbits -in a quiet place, but still they [ come along, and I hope sinerrely that the very lust one will come, and then Iwe can and will get good shooting. It |is the duty of every farmer and every j farmer's son to kill all they can, and at once. If they won't kill them from a sense of duty, then bring the beaks along lo Mr. Hills, chemist at Cambridge, and get the 3d.—l am, etc.. FRANK -T. REYNOLDS. i "Trecarne," Cambridge.
