A TRUMPED UP CHARGE.
AGAINST A MINING MAGNATE. PERJURER SENT TO GAOE. (Received 10.50 a.m.) LONDON, June 17. As an outcome of the case heard in November last between Sir J. B. Robinson and Louis Cohen, Emil James Bcrger has been sentenced to three years' penal servitude at the Old Bailey on perjury in testifying against Sir Joseph Robinson concerning an alleged incident "in Kimberlev in 1870.
Sir J. B. Robinson, the South African mining magnate, received £1000 from Louis Cohen, author of a book of reminiscences of Kimberley. and £100 from Mr. Bennett, publisher, for alleging that Sir Joseph, in his early career, was a fraudulent dealer, a swindler, and a coward. Sir Joseph gave evidence that he lost his hearing through exj.*>sure on Basuto battlefields. He contributed £100.000 to assist in the war against the Boers and £jSO,AOO after the restoration of peace. He denied Cohen's allegations. Cohen gave evidence that Sir Joseph's reputation in England was that of a coward, a betrayer of women, and an illicit diamond buyer.
