SOUTHERN NEWS.
(By Telegraph.—Pres3 Association.) FTRE IN LOWER HUTT. WELLINGTON, this day. An eight-roomed house in the Lower Hutt, owned and occupied by John Weir, was totally destroyed by fire early this morning, the occupants narrowly escaping. The house was insured for £500 in the Cuardian and the furniture for £325 in the State Fire Department. SEVERE THUNDERSTORM. GREYMOUTH, this day. A heavy south-west gale which has prevailed during the past few days, increased last night to hurricane force, with vivid lightning and thunder, and continued till seven this morning. Torrential rain fell, varied with ha?l showers. The weather shows but little improvement and shipping is at a standstill. There is a strong current ia the river. MISCELLA NEOU S. GISBORNE, this day. William Joseph Owen, aged 50, went to town on Saturday evening and did not return. His wife fouud him lying dead on the verandah at three a.m. Heart disease is believed to have been the cause.
