PRECARIOUS PEDESTRIANISM.
The president of a temperance association told the following story in the course of a speech on temperance: —• "It is easy to answer the opponents of temperance. At a mariners' bethel, for example. I once heard an opponent very easily answered. "The preacher was urging his sailor audience not to drink: he was pointing out to them the Divine, admonitions against drinking, when a shellback aroso unsteadily, '•' 'Captain,'' said -the shellback, 'I don't —hie—believe everything that's prin-teo in the Scriptures, Take that there —hie —walking on the water. I don't believe anybody can walk on water. Can you— hie —do it yourself?" •'My friend,' the minister answered. '1 can walk bctterr-orrwater than I can ou mm.' "
