NORTHCOTE WATER CHARGES.

FIFTY PER CENT REDUCTION".

At the meeting of the !Northeote Borough Council last night, Councillor Arthur E. Greenslade moved, in accordance with notice given a month ago, as follows:—"That the ordinary water supply charges for the current year, viz., from Ist January, 1912, to 31st December, 1912, be as follows: — 2J per cent on the annual value for consumers, with a minimum charge of 5/, and per cent for non-consumers, with a minimum charge of 2/6." In speaking to the motion, Councillor Greenslade showed that even upon the reduced prices suggested (which were just one-half those charged last year in each instance), the year's income of the water maintenance account would be £451 7/, and the working PYponses (including an allowance of £65 for repairs, insurance, and sundries) would b? £334 2/6, leaving a surplus on tlie year's working of £117 4/6This result, he contended, justified the reduction proposed, whkh would be, therefore, permanent, and he hoped it would be the forerunner of further reductions to residents, and tfhat the charges for the extraordinary supply would also be reviewed in the ni-ir future According to the balance-sheet, the waterworks maintenance account was in credit (after deducting liabilities amounting to £236 5/9) to the extent of £320 12/6, which, with the estimated profit for the year (£ll7 4/6) placed the sum of £437 17/ at the Comic;;'* disposal for water supply (which would increase the annual revenue), printing water ibv-lawe, etc., in addition to which there was an unexpended balance of ; £ 17 jo/3 from the waterworks loan account, which was also available for service extensions. Councillor Jas. T. Fearnlcy seconded. AJter considerable discussion, the resolution was carried unanimously.
