KETEM A-REET BOROUGH COUNCIL. The Newmarket Borough Council met on Wednesday. There were present: The Mayor (Mr. D. Tee*), .Messrs. A. B. Whittome, W. .T. JafCrey, S. Donaldson, W. H. Hambiin, W. J. ffMeera, and C. Leek. Electricity Supply.—The draft agreement (forwarded by the iborongh eeUcilof) between the City and Newmarket over the supply of electricity to the borough was referred to the engineer (Mr. Lockie Gannon) for report to the Streets Committee. Bead Improvement.—The town clerk of Sonth Brisbane ivrote askinsr for particulars of machinery used by the Council for preparing bitnmirjons-boand road metal, -with nddresses of makers and of persons supplying bitumen. The letter also asked for Information later on as to the wearing qualities of the roads laid derwn with the metal. It was desired to send the information asked. It was decided to instruct tie engineer to prepare specifications and call tenders for the supply of bluestone epauls for the foundations of roads under ■the improvement 6Cfceme. Eates.i—lt was decided to hold a special meeting in a fortnight's time to confirm the striking of the following rates for the ensuing year:—-.General account, 1/9; waterworks, 3d; Hospital and Charitable Aid, 3d; drainage, No. 1 3d, No. 2 3d, No. 3 3d. In speaking on the subject," the Mayor remarked that the new rates represented an increase of 6d over those of last year, this being dne to collection of -She. -waterworks and- drainage Xo. 2 rates, -which , 'were Dot previously collected. The Council was taking advantage of the Act in paying the first year's interest on the £30,000 loan out of the loan itsel?. ' A street improvement rate would not be struck till next year, but by then the genera] rate would be so reduced that, the rates would probably show a reduction, instead of an. increase. BAST-STREET MISSION. The anniversary frift tea in connection with the Auckland Methodist Mission was held last night, and was well attended. At 8 p.m. the public meeting was held, at which' satisfactory reports -were submitted. Mr T. B. Arthur presided. Addresses were delivered by the Revs. G. Bond and N. Turner. Sisrer Kenneth, and Mr X Tyler. The speeches were intersprrserl with musical items, including selections by orchestra, anthems by the choir, and solos b.v Miss Hettie Hunt and Mr W. Aspinall, and a violin eolo by Master Frank Parsons. ST. ANDREWS SOCIETY. The annual business meeting of the St. Andrew's Society, combined with proceedings of a more enlivening nature, was held In the Society's Hall last evening. Mr P. M. Mackay presided. The report presented •by the secretary (Mr T. H. Hanson) stated that members had won all tbe dancing events at Te Aroha, Tc Kuiti, Otorohanga, and Walpu, as well as 6econd prizes at .the New Zealand championships and the Highland dancing on Labour Day. Mr McDonald himself had a record of fifteen firsts, five seconds, and two thirds at five meetings. Mr W. Chadwick, a member of the band, had won the New Zealand championships for jigs and hornpipes, while PipeMajor C. McDonald won the championship lor piping. The choral class had a membership of 45, and Mr A. M. Bryden, the conductor, had done good wort The balance-sheet presented by Mr A. Murray Bell showed the assets over liabilities to be £188 V. Mr P. M. Mackay (the president), in moving the adoption of the report, spoke of the loss sustained by the society in the death of Mr J. Edmiston. the late secretary, and at his request those present stood as a mark of respect. On resuming Mr Mackay said that in the near Be hoped to 'gee a revival in Calrdonlan eporfcs gatherings in Auckland. He suggested that New Year's Day would be an appropriate occasion on which to hold the meeting. Mr Mackay poixrted twtt that from time to time Scotch immigrants landed in Auckland, and he thought that it. was the fluty of the society to take some Interest in the new arrivals from' the Old Land. It was decided that the Council be empowered to take what steps were considered necessary in this direction. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, Mr P. M. Mackay (re-elected): vK-e-presidents. Messrs J. R. Neil and T. N. Baxter; trustees, Messrs .1. Jf. Memrie and R. L. Stewart: auditors, Messrs A. Murray 801 l and C Ldtrlejohn: committpp. Messrs J. Gardner, J. B. King, G. M. Johnston, .T. Ronerteon, D. Porsyri, P. Mountain, and W. N. Mc Intosh: ser-retary. Mr T. B. Hanson (reelfctpd). The appointment of treasurer, vice Mr A. Murray 8011, retiring after eifrht years' service, was left in the hands of the Council. Several nesv members were proposed. Sonprs and instrumental selections -were contributed by members, tie meeting concluding Tvith ithe singing of "Auld Lang Syne." OLD THAMES BOYS' ASSOCIATION. The first reunion of the Old Thames Boys' Association took place at the Druids' Hall, Newton, last night. Over 100 members and visitors assembled, and bed a most enjoyable evening. The toasts of "The Kins," "The Thames Old Boys," The Underground Miners." "The Visitors." "Our Entertainers," and "Success to the Old Thames" were honoured. During the evening the president (Mr. W. Btomfield). on behalf of the members, presented Mr. P. Laycock (the Association secretary) with, a handsome gold medal, bearing the emblem of the Ae>sociatJon. Mr. Layeock suitably responded.
