TWO POPULAR INSTITUTIONS. The Librarian rpported to the Auckland City Council last night that 1484 ' books had been added to the general stock at the Free Public Library during : the year. There were 45,331 volumes in ! stock on April Ist, 1911. but 207 volumes had to be deducted. 47 being missing and j 13 -withdrawn from the reference library j and 147 from the lending library; 23 ' missing, 33 lost and pa-id for. 71 with- | drawals, and 20 taken by subscribers, j The loss covers two years. I The reference library was open 302 ! days of 12 hours a day. and the volumes fonsulted averaged fully -40 daily. In the lending library, open 307 days, the i books issued totalled 41.554. a decrease of 14T>7 as ■compared with th.- ligurrs : of "The previous year. It was estimated that the num- : ber of visiters to the library for the ! year was 144,000. The attendance at the Art Gallery was 67,707, an increase nf- 7500 -en, the previous year's figures.
