Messrs. W. A. Veitcn, M.P. (Wanganui) and J. Robertson, M.P. (Otaki), who have been in Auckland on Labour business, returned South last night. Major-General Godley, G.0.C., returned from Wbangaxei on Saturday evening, having inspected the 11th (North Auckland) Mounted Regiment. Mr. W. T. Jennings, ex-M-P. for Taumarunui, arrived in Auckland from the South yesterday morning, and will be here for a few days. He is staving at the Thistle Hotel. " ' ' In commemoration of his long anl valuable services at Mayor of Timaru. the Borough Council presented Mr. James Cranio, .M.1 , ., and Mrs. Craig.e witn some handsome pieces of silver plate afarewell gifts. It is now known with certainty (says the "Dominion") that Mr. Joseph Hell was chief engineer of the ill-fated Titanic, anil friends who knew him as a regular visitor to Now Zealand may possibly remember the cablegram's laconic statement: "No engineers were saved." Mr. Hell traded here for many years as chief engineer of the old lonic and the present Athenie. On his retirement, after ten 'ear-' service, Mr. hoekie Gannon, of the engineer's- staff of the Auckland Harbour Board, was entertained by his fellowemployees on Friday, and presented with an office desk and a copy of a standard j work on civil engineering.
