VISIT TO TE KXTTI.

Tbc new Minisetr for Pnblic Works, the Hon. W. D. S. llacDonald, who paid a visit to Te Kuiti yesterday in connection with the. making of a presentation to Mr. W. Jennings, was met at the local Chamber of Commerce by a representative gathering of prominent people from Tanmarunui and Ohura.

Among those who congratulated the Minister upon his elevation to Cabinet rank, and gave him a hearty welcome to tha district, were Messrs. Wackrow, Jennings, Loveday. and Falwa&ser. Mr. MacDonalcl. in thanking the settlers, dealt, specially with tike question of native lands, and said hs ielieved that every acre of such land in a county or adjacent to a borough should bear its fair share of taxation, and without doing an injustice to either Maori or European he hoped' to place legislation on the Statute Book which would give effect to such a scheme. He did not believe in seeing largo areas cf land lying idle, and thought the natives should have a chance of farming their lands on the same footin" as Europeans. The. Minister said he was not in office for his own aggrandisement, but for the good of the people, and if his policy did not suit, he had no desire to-remain a Minister.
