RAINING SCHOOL TEACHERS.
! AND THEIR PAY. At the Education Board meeting thig morning, thp chairman (Mr. G. J. (j3§_ Kind) brought up the question of com. mensurate pay to assistants at normal' schools and training colleges for tha standard of their work. He pointed out, with some emphasis, that the assistantg » at such sj'nools were supposed to pos-eai speci.l attainments, expected to Btand | a-- models on the highest rung of the ' i ladder, to give special instruction to the young collegians whom they taught, and bear special responsibilities, yet they n> ceivcd no more salary than other tegjj ers. He considered that if these assist- | ants at normal schools were called unci. j for such special qualifications, then it! j was only right that the Department j ' ! slioula reward them in proportion. Such j work made heavy demands on the teacher and called for particular efficiency, w_ich ; it was only fair to recognise. . V| Mr. G. VV. Murray also bore witness to ! ; the great responsibility under which i I normal school teachers laboured, and t_i j difficulties attending their work, with j" which the ordinary teacher did not have 1 to cope. Some of the other members confcirr buted to the discussion by the utterance'!'■ of similar sentiments, and it was tolly;' resolved to communicate with the IS_ij| partment on the subject.
