The suh-commlttee set up to Inquire Into i the position of Grade Nought teachers or i In other words, those having charge of small > back block schools, recommended that an effort should be made to have their rate of ! salary Increased, both in the interests o/ the education of the children of settler, in , the back blocks and of the teachers them- ; selves. The committee decided that the pre- . sent rate of pay for teachers at schools of t three or four children should he Increased from £-24 10/ to £50. of sis pupils to £60 and or eight pupils to £70 per annum The chalrnkn said that the commutes considered those in charge of these small . schools having only three of four pupils aboured under disadvantages which made it Imperative that something should be done to Increase the pay. Ho would submit the recommendation to the minister and honed _ that something would be done. On the motion of Mr. Harris, a hearty vote of thanks was accorded the committee for its work. . ESSAY COMPETITION. * Inspector-General of Schools notified that the winners in the North Island of i the prizes presented by the British and i I'oreigu Sailors' Society for the best essays on "King Alfred the Great: His Character ' and Influence, Especially on British Naval ' lastory,' were Robert Pererck (Putar.ru) l Ella Maher <W_tho_), and Muriel Mountier (Katllcati No. 2). On the motion of the chairman, It was decided to send a letter of congratulation to each of the successful competitors. NORTHCOTE SCHOOL.
