HASTINGS, this day.
A flve-roomed house in Lowell-street owned by Mr: J. G. Hill and occupied by. Gavin Allah, union secretary, -was destroyed by fire at 9.30 last evening. Owing to the absence oi a water supply, the Fire Brigade wr.s unable tc render, assistance, and everything was- lost. Allan's sons, aged live and eight years, the only occupants of the house at the time of the outbreak, had a harrow escape. A man passing along the adjacent road heard the sere-ins of cHldren, and running to the burning building was just in time to effect a rescue. htr. Allen was attending the New Zealand Labour party meeting, and his wife ' waa away nursing In the country.
