THE CHANTILLY MURDERS,

A sensation has been caused by the renewal of the motor outrages, which caused so much excitement a short time ago. The gang of apaches, who killed • chauffeur near Chantilly, hid in a roadmender's shelter at Montgeron, and awaited the arrival of ft motor car. There were two chauffeurs aboard tho car. One was kijled instantly, and the other, who was wounded, feigned to bs dead until the assassins boarded the car and motored to Chantilly, 40 miles aw?.y, making a wide circuit to avoid Paris.
Cm reaching Chantilly they tmet a wcman who was watching the bankFour of the aparhc3 entered the bank, a fifth guarded the door with a loaded carbine, whilst the sixth remained ir, the car.
The cashier of the bank was killed immediately. The clerk lingered for ten minutes., An office boy was wounded. The messenger escaped and raised the alarm. The assassins seized money amounting to about 40,000 francs (between £1,600 and £1,700), aid escaped in the car at a speed of 60 miles an hour.
They drove towards Paris, firing intermittently at any persons who attempted to follow or stop them. Several persons were hit by the bullets.
The telephones were got to work, and the police being aroused, a wild chase followed.
Two policemen on bicycles overtook the car, owing to the tyres collapsing.
The six robbers alighted and reacbec" the railway line as two trains were pnssing at a low speed. They boarded the train, and the police, not knowing, lost 35 minutes In securing telephonic connection with the Paris terminus. The men thus escaped.
A number of bullet holes were found in tho deserted motor car, a. well as •three blood-stained handkerchief-* and many revolver and carbine cartridges.
Late at night the police on bicycles pursued a car containing three men, one of whom shouted "help," and flung out a pad of cotton wool saturated with chloroform. The car escaped.
The banks in the vicinity of Paris are providing their cashiers with revolvers. The Government is introducing a bill to provide a police automobile corps.
The apaches have been identified as those who killed a gendarme in the Place de Havre a month ago.
Soldiers are now posted at all stations with loaded revolvers, in the hop* of arresting the murderers. The sum of £4,000 has been offered as a reward for their arrest.
