FAMILY JARS.
THE MAGISTRATE INTERVENES HUSBAND AND WIFE PLEDGED. William White appeared at the Magistrate's Court this morning before Mr. C. C. Kettle. S.M., to answer his wife's plfea for maintenance, separation, and guardianship of four children. Ho pleaded not guilty.
Mr. Quartlcy appeared for the complainant.
Mrs. White (who was represented by Mr. Quartley) alleged that her husband ill-t.reated her, got drunk, and failed: to provide maintenance: She also allfeged that he bad smacked her across the face that morning with a towel. In answer to her husband she said he asked her sister to take her away, as a few weeks' rest would do her good, because he said he was afraid she was goir.g out of her mind. Her husband's mother had given clothing to her children. She went on her knees to her husband! beside the bed last night, and pleaded with him to let the eaee be withdrawn and live together properly. He replied that she had offended his mother.
The husband, when called, said his wife really wanted medical' treatment. He had nothing against his wife. She looked after beT home all right. He did not neglect his wife, and denied any acts of cruelty. The husband's mother said she had never interfered, except in the interests of her daughter-in-law. Ultimately Mr. Kettle made both husband and wife swear to try and live amicably together, and adjourned the case for a month.
