KILLED BY A MOTOR CAR.
TWO OLD T. A DIES BUH DOWN.
IN REMtIERA ROAD
As the result of a motor car accident yesterday afternoon at the corner of Remuera-road and Victoria-avenue, Mrs Prowse, of Wanganui, was killed and Mrs Jordan, of Tauranga, was very seriously hurt. These two old ladies (Mrs Prouse was 68 years of age and Mrs Jordan is about 72 years at age) were step-sisters and they have been on a visit to Auckland, staying near Victoria-avenue with Mr A. T. H. Pittar, who is Mrs Jordan's son-in-law. Mrs Jordan is the wife of the Rev. Canon Jordan (of Tauranga), and Mrs Prowse was the wife of Mr S. S. Prowse, of Wanganui. Yesterday afternoon they had gone up Victoria-street in the 'bus that connects with the Remuera tram. When they reached Remuera-road they got out to walk across the road to the usual tram stopping piace, and then it is said that •they seemed to hesitate and "began to recroßS the road.
About this time Garnet Campbell, aged 23, came along in a private motor car, and before anything could 'be done to avert a collision both old ladies were run down.
They were carried unconscious into Mi F. G. "Blott's chemist shop and Dr. Hunt was summoned and was soon in attendance. Mrs Prowse died in about 20 minutes from the severe nature of her injuries. Her clothing was considerably torn, showing that she had been dragged along by the car. Mrs Jordan was taken to the hospital in the ambulance and it was found thai her injuries consisted of a broken arm, three broken ribs, a broken collarbone and a cut on the head. tShe was also con siderably bruised and knocked about The passage to the hospital was a pain ful one for the semi-conscious patient, the ambulance jolting over tine very rough road to the hospital. This road is at present undergoing repair and the journey in the ambulance was so rough that one of the attendants on the front of the vehicle was thrown from his seat and received a nasty injury on the leg. Canon Jordan was informed 'by telegram of the accident and came on ta Auckland by the Tauranga steamer, which was delayed to enable him t* come straight through with as little delay as possible. It is not expected that Mrs Jordan will be able to leave tihe hospital for six or seven weeks, but her condition today was as favourable as would reason, ably be expected in the circumstances. THE INQUEST OPENED. The inquest into the circumstances of the death of Mrs Prowse was opened this morning before the Coroner (Mr T. Gresham) and a jury of six. Evidence oi identification was given by George Parvin, a gardener residing at Remuera. H» stated that "to the best of his belief Mri Prowse's eyesight was failing (ahe wore glasses out of doors) and hof hearing was defective. Further inquiry was adjourned until Thursday, 9th May, by whicn time it i* hoped that Mrs Jordan will be suffi- , ciently recovered to give evidence.
