The latest acquisition to the T'nion Company's fleet the Tahiti, which arrived at' Wellington from Sydney yesterdav. will inaugurate the new Sydney Wellington-San Francisco service, which she will maintain with the Aorangi and the "Maitai. The vessel is of 7585 ton? prosp. and she has accommodation for 160 first-class and 60 second-class passengers. She is fitted with refrigerating chambers of 100,000 cubic feet capacity, has a speed of 18 knots, and is re-puted to be a good sea boat. On her run out from England she •brought 350 immigrants to New South Wales. The Tahiti's passenger accommodation seems quite satisfactory, the cabins being roomy and wvfi ventilated. She. should prove a ■jxmula.r ship in her new run.
When playing on the roof of the launch cabin at Kerepeohi on Sunday week a bov named Donglas Qaiartermain fell into "the Piako River and -was drowned. TTis body was found floating in the river yesterday, and at the inquest it was stated that the lad -was plavinc wi'rth two dogs when he was bumped by one of tbem and rolled overboard. A"verdict of accidental drowning was returned.
