Tbe'-Obligado gelding Obsidian is standing up to his work at Elleralle all right, and ahould-«oon-be ready to carry silk .again. The name of Cordite has 'been claimed for the colt by Soult—Lyddite, which, la. under E. Pope's charge at Blleislie. The gelding from Rangirrm, which is-on inmate of P. Jones' stable, has had the name of Collier Lad claimed for him. A Melbourne, buyer recently cabled pricing the hurdle horse Euroco, but the price quoted, 60Qga, did not lead to business.

Though Sandstream was allowed to drop otrt of the Auckland Cup, it is understood the son of San Fran will be a competitor at the A.R.C. Summer Meeting. It now transpires that it was while riding Aeolus in the hurdle race at Moonee Vtt'lley that -F. Howard was hurt. His injuries -were a broken collarbone and a slight hurt to his back. T. A. Williams will dbride his team at Christmas time, sending Blue Mountain, Peggy Pryde and Mamn-ere to the Thames, the rest of his string competing at the A.R.C. Summer Meetlu.r. C. Scott, who was injured -while srhooiing Aristocrat at Eilerslie some few iweeta ago, has sufficiently recovered to leave the hospital, but will be unable to ride again for some little time.

.Advocate is getting through long steady work at Hllerslie, and so far ha* shown no trace of the mishap which befell him last -September. After a lengthy spell the Freedom gelding Bully is being hacked about by D. Bannatyne preparatory to going into active work. At present Bully looks a lilt in the rough. The freedom geMlng Ilaka has been transferred from W. Sharp's stable to that of W. Moberley'H, and is now being worked, a c EUerslie by that trainer. D. Bannatyne hits decided to try Bon Jour a-t the jumping game, and the son of Cuirassier was given his first lesson during the week, shaping satisfactorily. It is stated the main reason for the Auckland trip of Prim and Star Dancer being abandoned was owing to the fact that Murray-Aynsley was unable io get a strong horseman to ride Prim. The racehorses Taft and Parable changed hands during the progress of tTity Woodviile Meeting, being purchased by the Canterbury trainer, J. MeComb. It is underotood Thar :;(X>gs was -the price paid for Parable, bat tbe price of Taft did not transpire. While jumping at EUerslie on Tuesday Prophet gave himself rather a nasty cnt by striking one of the hurdles, but it is not serious, and the little son of St. Pan! worked again on Thursday morning without showing any ill-effccte. The many friends of Sir W. ,T>ffons -will regret to hear that the veteran sportsman is still under the doctor, and is not proCTesKtng as favourably as could be wished. It would be a big task to And an AuckVsnrter who wonld not be pleased to -see "Old friend BITI" about again. Cp to the present the work at Ellessiie has been of a very moderate character, and it is doubtful if in any previous seasou before the big summer carnival nave the tracks borne such a lifeless appearance as at present. Nest week should see things liven up, but tbe dnlness that has characterised the proceedings this year will long be remembered. The acceptances for the Auckland t.np are of a satisfactory character, nothing of cote having been dropped, and the field promises to be above the average.. So far the work of the local candidates has not been of a startUmj character, but witti the arrival of the Southerners next week some life ought to be put into the work. The general oceptances are also satisfactory, and it will be strange if a record crowd is not present at EUerslie on Boring Day. The committee of the Auckland Racing Club, in view of the fact that the first hurdle in the mile and three-quarter races at EHerslie is a bit near the start, have decided to rearrange the location of the lenccs. The first hurdle will be between the half-mile and the mile and a-half poets, the second just betow the mile and B-quarter post, the third in front of the stewards' stand, the fourth between the «eveu and sis furlong posts, and the fifth "by the old live-furlong post. These obstacles "will be in the same positions in the two-mile events, with the exception that there will fence in front of the stewards' stand. The new arrangement "will do away with the hurdle near the half-mile post and the one at the turn into the straight, both of which were a bit tricky. Coughing, as described by a German, authority, causes trouble in the training stables of that country, and remedies ore not easOy found. Whilst the subject was being discussed an experienced trainer stated that, after trying all the American nostrums without success, he arrived at the conclusion that the tieet remedy is absolute rest, fresh air, scrupulous cleanliness, and for the first four or seven days a rigid fasting cure. He has also noticed that any work given to a horse sickening with the fever causes a rise In temperature, and induces inflammation of the longs; high-pressure feeding, resorted to formerly, he considers a mistake. Another pronouncement is to this effect: "Bad weather, cold winds, and rain have nothing to do iwlth the spastmodic outbreaks of coughing. It is suggested that the German, racing societies should offer a tempting reward to the cleyer chemist who finds a remedy.''

One of the old hands at the -dub, who at times writes reminiscences for toe papers on the old days of the Cap, told me (writes "Tatiara," In referring to the settling over the Melbourne Cnp meeting) that both Trafalgar and The Parisian were backed for about; £130,000. Still, he thinks Cerise and Blue, who ran in the Cnp of 1885, was supported for as mnreh. money. Indeed, hj» is of opinion that Cerise and Blue 6till holds the record as to one big i>e.t. and, in support of his statement, he relied up Mr H. Oxenham. who owned the latter, and .fro said he harked Cerise and Bine to win Sim £105.000. and all toM the mare must birve carried at least £IT>O.OOO. '•Probably,'* be said. "Trafalgar and The Parisian "were backed for more, but £130.000 is a fair estimate." Mr Oxenham Tiinks betting is just as big over the Melbourne Cop to-day as in the old days. "Indeed," be added, "It must be, as there are more- rimgmen. and Mn» of them Tnafrw books up to £20,000. Not on£y that, but dour times as many people attend race <wttlt -yean incV* ,

Tbe Auckland Trotting Club have no reason (to complain of the character of the aceptances for their Summer 'Meeting, and a record gathering looks to be in view. The defection of PeJrene from tbe A.B.C. Railway will break up a lot of doubles for the Southern Ally was one o" the first selections for the event.

Mr. H. 1 inker arrived in Auckland on Thursday. Air. Tinker, in a. chat, informed me 'that itbc colt from Hcse .Madder, pur-, chased at the Christenn-neh sales toy Mr. | Johnston, and which was found -to havo j a broken ja*w. vsas the wotHt case he ever' but. The teeth "were hanging loose, and had to he all taken out and replaced, and no less than 30 pieces of hone were re- • moved. The eott is now getting on aU-i right, and is almost better. Erom what can .be gathered. It is under-1 stood that the coorse will not tie available as usual for trainers on the Sunday before the tnoating. This Is a distinctly retrograde step, for trainers with horses -wiHi two-mile engagements cannot afford to let them re-: main idle frit a day. The work is ail over i before nine o'clock in the morning, 30 no one's feeangs are hurt, and it is to be, 'hoped that if the committee have serious I thoughts of closing the course, will give the matter full consideration before they do so. In former years no objection has been raised about the course toeing open, and trainers generally have' hard enough work to get Iheir horses ready w itu- ] out being unduly handicapped by having to allow them to remain idle a day.
