I CFIEISTCHURCH, Friday. Work on the waterfront at L.ytte.lton raf practically at a standstill this morning, owing to a special meeting of the ■waterside workers, which opened at eight o'clock. The business was to consider the sew demands to be made by the union, and to appoint delegates to the conference with shipping companies at Dunedin next wepk. Consequently no men presented themselves for employment at eight o'clock this morning. The meeting wa,s held in camera- Mr. \ owe (secretary of the union 1. when seen by a reporter after the meeting, stated that the meeting had fully discussed the wages and conditions of labour, and had dra-wn up a statement of demands, including certain increases in pay and improvements in working conditions. These •will be submitted ro the conference at Thmedin on Tuesday next. Mr. Voyee states that he is hopeful that an amicable settlement will be arrived at, bv the conference. Work on the waterfront and in the crain stores started at one o'clock this afternoon.
