FOLLOWED A GIRL ABOUT.
MAKBIED MAW'S INFATUATION. Gordon William Smyth, a carpenter, •who pleaded guilty to having assaulted a girl named Dora Attneld, by catching hold of her by the shoulder, was described by Sub-Inspector Hcndrey at the Police Court this morning as one of the most contemptible blackguards ever brought before the Court. The accused was a rather good looking man of about thirty years of age, and the Sub-Inspec-tor said that he was a married man with i his wife living in Auckland, but had by some means got introduced to the complainant, a young girl from Alt. Koskill, and paid court to her. He had pestered her with his attentions, followed her about and terrorised her with threats to shoot her and to cut his own throat. He had also borrowed money from her. She had been so pestered that she had gone to the police for protection. Yesterday the man followed her about town and on to a car. When she got off, he followed and caught hold of her by the shoulder. Then a constable who Had been watching him caught hold of bim and arrested him. The Sub-Icspector put into Court a letter written to the girl by the accused, ft was couched in the most affectionate terms, requesting his '"darling" and "pet" to meet him, and concluding with a string of crosses, but beneath tho wheedling tone of the letter was a veiled threat that if the girl failed to meet him they "would go out together." The man said that tho girl hud met him by appointment, made by Tier when she knew her parents were against it, and ho wm getting the blame. Mr. Cutten, SiM., said that. nccused would be bound over in two sureties of £25 ead!h to be of good behaviour towards the complainant for twelve months, and for the assault sentenced hiin to fourteen days in gaol. The Masistrato remarked that if it were not that tho man was the support of hi* wife and family he would have got a much longer t«Tm of iimtroonment.
