PERSIA'S INDEPENDENCE.

Lord La-mington. on behalf of the Persia Committee, appeals to Britain to maintain its integrity and independence, and not allow Persia to fall into the plight of Bokhara and Khiva. It recalls the engagements of 1883 and the Convention of 1907. Britain's acquiescence in Russia’s actions raised a serious situation. The national honour and interests of both is involved. The House of Assembly, after an allnight sitting, is still discussing the Estimates. In the early morning the Item “Speaker’s salary” was the occasion of a long and strong Opposition comment on the Speaker’s alleged misdeeds. The debate led to uproar, members hurling uncomplimentary epithets across the chamber. For a while the Deputy-Chair-man of Committees was unable to control the House, and finally the item was forced through by the application of the closure. In the Legislative Council the Government representative announced that the Government would not proceed with the Stamp Duties Bill until the House meets in February. The question of the constitutionality of the tax on boat fares had been raised, and the Government would await the Grown Law Officer’s opinion. A BANK HELD UP.
