KING'S COLLEGE PRIZEGIVING.

A FUTURE PUBLIC SCHOOL.

£ 10,000 WANTED.

The annual prize-giving i a connection with King/'s College. Rerauora, • was held in a lame marquee in the school grounds yesterday. Unfortunately the weather was" exceedingly unpropitious, and the sport* portion of th« programme had to be abandoneM. I The Rev. W. Beatty presided, a nd amongst those present were tha Mayoress (Mrs. Parr). Dr. McDowell.' Mr. K. K. Mulgaa ' Chief inspector of; Schools). ,ind Mr. f. T. Major (headmaster). In his annua! report Mr. ' Major said that the school ended the year with 270 boys, of whom 100 were boarders. The accommodation was the same as last year, when a number of boarders had to be refused. Until they had thoroughly modern buildings they would work at a disadvantage. In regard to organisation, there was added to the upper school a sixth form to meet tbe requirements of those boys who should return after passing the matriculation. The preparatory department now consisted of 4"> boys in three divisions. In the Junior Civil 'Service examination they had -0 passes, and ii the matriculation 30. There were f-mr annual scholarships in connection with the school, but the winners could not yet be announced. In order to cater for' the 270 boys in tile school, there was a regular staff of 13, which was considered Hberal. The Chief Inspector of the Auckland Board of Education had reported very favourably on the work- of the whole school. For the last 16 years universal training; had been in vogme at King's, and be had always held that it was of the utmost importance to thoroughly train boys in the elements of drill. Football and cricket were at as high a standard as ever, and it was their rub- that every boy. unless physically unfit, must give at least two afternoons a week from four to five in order to play his games. The prizes were then presented by the Rev. Beatty, whilst the sports trophies were given away by Mrs. Tarr. The prize-list is appended: LTFER SCHOOL Form VI First in School, J. a. Knaerton.
