SWEET PEA SHOW.
MAYOR'S OPENING BEIIABKS. The .\ac';!;iDd Horticultural Society's Sivt?ot ;<ea and carnation show was jonutrly opened in the Choral Hall yvsi'erdsy afternoon by his Worship the -Mayor of Auckland "(Mr. C. J. Parr), ■u-ho took the opportunity of contra tuia.ting the Satiety, and the exhibitors on the remarkably fine display of flowers, the more as one of the judges, -a "Wellington gentleman, had told him that in. some respects it-sur-passed the last Southern shows of the kind. He also wished to congratulate I\lr. H. T. G oldie, who had carried off the majority of the prizes for sweet peas. The Society's greatest benefactor, Mr. H. Brett, had also come forward with a fine display of carnations, thus departing from his practice of standing aside in favour of less experienced growers. The fact was that since a Wellington gentleman had come ■up and made almost a queen sweep, Mr. Brett had felt it incumbent upon him to re-enter the competitions in the interests of carnation-growing in Auckland. Mr. Parr also referred to the children's show, which he considered to ibe of great educational value. As rh«irman of the Education Board,"he iicd naturally taken an interest in the ■work of the schools, and he felt that any curriculum which did not include the work of. the garden was incomplete. He then declared the show open. THE PRIZE LIST.
