O'Shea, will ride Duma In the Auckland Cap. The top weight In the Railway Handicap, Equltae, Has mine in t<n a lot of support lor that event, and it la stated she B to fulfil her engagement. I Mr. T. H. Lowry has allowed Bobxlkoff I and Sea Pink to drop out of the Auckland Cup, In which event his sole representative wiu be Bellah. Some of the riding at Takapuna on Wednesday was of a very ordinary character, and Id one or two instances tne losing fee was easily earned. The apprentice, J. OlSbea, who rode: Sphinx to victory in the St. Andrew's Handicap at Takupiuia ou Wednesday, piloted his uftli winner, and is now ineligible to claim the apprentice allowance. The Cuirassier gelding Tul Cakobau has been broken to harm's*;, and is being driven toy his owner, Mr. K. Duder. There is every probability of Tui Cakoban carrying silk again in the near future. After being schooled at EHorslie on Thursday morning, *lie iM-eniiwee gelding, Jack Johnson, was very lame, but the seat of the trouble could not be ascertained, it is thought that he ricked his shoulder. The Hierareh, gelding. Hierarchy, wihlch. was sold as a yearling two years ago for 360 jruineas, and which has never raced, was sold by auction yesterday at the N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Co.'* yaPds for six guineas, i[r. S. Evelyn being the purchaser. The Gluten gelding Goldsize, ■which was .turned out in capital nick by J. Chaafe, jun.. looks like being useful, and his double i victory at Takajpuua on Wednesday was very easily earned. Goldsize is only a little fellow, but possesses a lot of p:ice, and It will b<> surprising If he does not add further to his winning account before long. ——— I The St. Pad seWing, Captain Paul, let his supporters down Renin on Wednesday, the best he could do bein?, to run third in the Poatii Hurdles at Takapuna. At one stoRE of the louruvy Captain JPkul looked like matlifs a ono-borse race of It, but (he Urea to nothing In the concluding stages, and a ! lot of bright gold was loet. After an absence of nearly twelve months the Sulvadan gelding Black Northern made his reappearance under silk at Takapuna on Wednesday, when he was sent out to contest the Tlrl Handicap Hurdles, r.laek Northern showed a lot of his old dash, and was forcing the pace In the early stages, but his condition failed him, and he linlshed ont of a place. The victory of Sphinx in the St. Andrew's Handicap at Takapuna ..n Wednesday was the surprise of the afternoon, and ter of Bluejacket returned s two-figure dividend. Sphinx, which is a half-sister to Ben Johoson. by Bluejacket, lias not done a great deal of racing, and iher win on Wednesday was the most important she has yet registered. Mr. C. Daweon, her owner, is at .present on a visit to Japan. When Mr. W. Ring returned to the Wattato from C"hrlntehuroh, alter the C.J.C. meeting, be brought back with him. Trireme, ii colt by Treadmill, owned by Sir George Clifford. The youngster was touched In the wind, and was sent up for llr. <:. Ring, who recently returned from America, jo operate on. Mr. Ring has operated on the colt, and the youngster is progressing favourably, ajid there is every reason to ti'e!lev« that successful results will follow. The Musketry gelding, Muskerwal, which managed to <lcod-beat with Tipperary In tile Melrose Handicap ou Wednesday, has ■been a long time giving his owner a return i"or the -money expended on him; and Wednesday's event was the fourteenth In wlilcn he has started during, hi« two years on the turf, and tiic fITSt time lie has succeeded in catching \thc iiidfees' teye. Bfuakewai'sJ owner Is one of those who race for pleasure, and now that the son of (Musketry nas started winning, It Is to toe hoped lie will continue. Nominations for all events a; the Auckland Trotting Club's Summer Meeting close with Uie secretary (Mr. C. P. Mart) on Friday next, the Bth lust., at 8 p.m. The up-to-date course of the Auckland Club and the fact that something like £2500 is .being distributed in stakes Is sure to attract a large number of outside entries, and the forthcoming meeting promises to mark the commencement of a new era in, trotting in Auckland. The sixth Feildlng Stakes only attracted a field of seven, three of which were two-year-olds, and the race was something of j a disappointment. The connections of both | Autumnus and Ermesngarde were very san- j guine of success, although the latter had | been having an easy time of it on account of the heavy state of the tracks. Autumnus was a hot favourite, but, according to the accounts In the southern Press, the veteran Naumai got out with a fly, and was never caught, winning easily by a distance estimated by some writers as half a length and toy others as a length and' a-half. Although Prophet iras only taken up recently toy J. Chaafe, junr., his connections are sanguine that the eon of St. Paul will be forward enough to fulfil his engagements at the A.R.C. Summer Meeting: During his rest Prophet has been fed regularly, ■while he was turned out in a large paddock, and, being a llgh-t-hearted little fello-w, he got plenty of exercise, so there won't be nrach useless lumber for his trainer to get oft between now and Boxing Day. ■Says the Napier writer, "The Squire":— Taking an a guide the able manner in which. Eobcikoflf got through his portion on Saturday morning, Caere cannot be a great deal the matter with him, for he swung along in a taking style and pulled up sound. Certainly mc track had been Improved by che showers which ihad visited the course the previous night, and in the early morning; still, they "were solid enough to find out the weakness of any of the gee-gees had there been any trouble about, and on «hose grounds it would appear as if the racing trail will see Bobrikoff again. The Auckland Racing Club have purchased ouc of "Julius"' patent totalizators, and exDfct to have it installed ready for their autumn meeting. The machine is stated to be an exceptionally good one, and it is ertimated that t-he iseie of tickets will be ron™W>ly q-uleker than at present, while as the tickets are sold they are registered 'on the grand total. This will effect a bis ! saving of time, as under the present system it has taken anything from ttireequar- ■ i ters of an hour to an hour and a quarter i I airing the day to adjust the totals after tie machine has closed down; but with toe new machine this delay will ne done away •with and will ena"blc investments to be I made up to the advertised time of starting the races. With the ! new machine working, the horses will not Ibe kept waiting nearly so long at the post las at present, wtalcU la Itself will be an 1 lawtfcDJbU- bow.
Me. SeTby's homes, Mosart, __■___, and, another, were schooled over hardies at _lle__e yesterday, all Jumping welL The trotting more Seacole eras disposed of at auction yesterday by Messrs. A, Backland and Sons for 28gns. ■F. Darts _ expected to snare with Mr. T. H. Dowry's horses for the A.R.C. Summer Meeting after the Woodrllle MeetingMr. Morse's weights tor the minor events at the Auckland Racing Club's Summer Meeting are due on Friday next, the Bth inst Although GoMfinderis showing at the Feilding meeting was something of a disappointment, the eon of San Fran has been paid up for in the Auckland Cup. One of Mr. E. J. Watts* representatives In the Auckland Cup, Cheddar, came In for some support for the two-mile race during the .week. There was a lot of Interference In the various events at Takapuna on Wednesday, and it is rather a pity the stewards did not deem It advisable to administer a word of caution to some of those riding. Mr. R. Wynyard's adjustments for the opening days racing of the Thames Jockey Clubs Summer Meeting are due on Friday "J*?: _ As „ there Promises to be a scarcity of light boys riding at the meeting, Mr. Wynyard will probably be found framing his -handicaps on a high scale. An Innovation was made In the Takapuna race cards by Inserting the placed horses at the Avondale J.C. Spring and Auckland R.C. Spring Meetings. The innovation is a start in the right direction, but might reasonably be carried further, and ft few more particulars be given. Probably as time advances further Improvements will be made. The general entries for the Auckland Summer Meeting, 1911-1912, are highly satisfactory as compared with the Summer Meeting 1910-1911, as the following comparative table shows:— 1910-11. 1911-12. Trial Handicap 18 ,__, 17 Robinson Handicap „ 35 ,_ 26 Nursery Handicap .. „ 18 _____ 27 Christmas Handicap ... 22 ,_ 27 Bowen Handicap .-„ 29 ,_ 30 Visitors' Handicap .... 26 ■_,_, 24 Ponsonby Hurdles _.. 18 ■'.-, 15 Criterion Handicap „ 17 ~.. 26 Waltemata Handicap . 24 _. 25 Salisbury Handicap _ 17 '„' 17 Ferguson Handicap ..39 ... 27 New Year's Hurdles ..15 .. 18 County Handicap .... 2.5 .._. 25 •Midsummer Handicap .18 ~ 33 Maiden Handicap .... 29 ____, 32 Glasgow Handicap .... 24 .... 32 Goodwood Handicap .. 35 .. 32 Sylvia Handicap .... 16 _._, 26 Auckland Hurdles .... 16 „- 22 Newmarket Handicap . 32 M 36 Grey Handicap 48 _, 40 521 557 With an acceptance of 21 for the Auckland Cup, all doubt as to whether a decent field will contest the event or not Is dispelled, and unless the unforeseen occurs, there promises to be at least fifteen runners. The defection of Bobrlkoff, which headed the list was expected, but some surprise has been occasioned by the fact that Loa Angelos still remains In. Reports from the South gave the information that the son of San Francisco was to compete at the Manawatu Meeting, but evidently his owners are not yet decided on their movements. Walmangu and his stable companion, Santa Rosa, both appear In the list the Auckland division being represented by this pair. Sedition, Soultoria, Domino, Maxwell, Ngapuka, and Duma, nnd probably the best of the lot will be hard to beat. Mendlp. which has earned a slh penalty as a result of his success at Feilding, is expected to fulfil his engagement. Sir George Clifford has paid up for both his three-year-olds, Counterfeit and Masterpiece, but certain Indications point to the last named being the stable elect. The much -discussed ' Miss. Mischief, which Is the ruling favourite, has had her engagement continued, as has Miscount, which is. at almost OS Short a price as Miss Mischief. Prim is expected, and also Coromandel, which has to carry 3n> _rtra for his win at Feilding, and altogether the field promises' to be as good a one as seen out at Ellerslie for some time
