FEDERAL TIMBER TARIFF.
KAURI DUTIES INCREASED. ____________ MERCHANTS RAISE THE PRICES. (Received 9.55 a.m.) MELBOURNE, this day. Introducing the tariff amendments,! Mr. Tudor stated that beyond allowing the importation of New Zealand white pine of certain sizes free, there would be no alteration in timber duties. The tariff does, however, raise the tariff on kauri by the deletion of sub-item B, item 303, which read: "New Zealand pine, undressed, sixpence a hundred superficial feet," and the substitution of an item dealing only with white pine for butter boxes. This throws other New Zealand pine under sub-item D: "Timber, undressed, half a crown a hundred feet." Merchants have raised the prices of New Zealand timbers other than white pine as follows:—Half-inch by a shilling a hundred superficial feet; three, quarter-inch eightpence, an inch and over two shillings.
