The strike- of Collie-burn miners delayed the departure of the steamer Walkure, .which has arrived from New York, en route to New Zealand. Failing to obtain bunkering coal at Bunbury, she proceeded to Albany.
. SHEARING BY CONTRACT. (Received-9:40 a.m.) SYDNEY, this day. The Workers' Union takes a plebiscite on the question of whether the contract system of shearing shall cease. There is reason to beNeve that the vote will be against the contract system. A NEW SUBMARINE. MELBOURNE, September 11. A doctor, resident in Victoria, has invented a combined submarine-torpedo boat with indicator, which he claims improves the navigability of the vessel, and also indicates the exact position of an enemy whe n submerged. The total cost of the boat is not more than £5,000. It can be handled with a crew of five. The Defence Department has ordered a full investigation.
MR. DAVID MILLS ENTERTAINED. MELBOURNE, September 11. On the eve of his departure for a holiday trip to New Zealand prior to taking charge of the office of the Union Steam Ship Company in Sydney, Mr. David Mills was made tho recipient of a presentation from a large number of friends a,nd comrades connected wLh the Australasian overseas and interstate shipping trades. He was subsequently entertained at dinner at the Australian Club.
