BIG FIRES IN GLASGOW.
HISTORIC SPOTS IN DANGER.
DAMAGE TOTALS £160,000.

LONDON, September 4,
The premises of the Glasgow Co-opera-tive Society, in Argyle-street, Glasgow, were destroyed by fire to-day, the damage being estimated at £IOO OOo".
Shortly after the blaze had been extinguished a second big outbreak occurred an the Trongatc, one of the chief streets of Glasgow, which forms a continuation, under another name, of Argyle-street. Twelve business premises were destroyed in this blaze, including the historic Tontine House, a well-known cafe. Other historic spots, including the Glasgow Cross, which is situated at the intersection of the High-street and the Trongate, were endangered, but were saved by the efforts of the firemen, four ef whom were seriously injured, z The damage in the second outbreak ia estimated at £60,000.
