NECESSARIES OF LIFE.
CUBING AN EVIL. At the meeting of the Watersid* Workers' Conference this morning, the committee appointed to deal with a vm mit brought if or ward, in reference t». necessities of life costing more wtoSW produced than in England, reported ta*t they had given the most ca,reful consideration to the subject, together witi various suggestions that had been m»4fc from time to time for grappling wiM J the difficulty. They had failed to SK. cover, however, a.ny suggestion tujr could be deemed practicable as \otig ** the production and distribution of li#( . necessaries remain in the hands of | class. The price of butter, particularly mentioned in the remit, was considered, unfortunately, but one of many evili that would remain with them as. as they, the workers, allowed the few to own and control the things the manjf produced. Instead, therefore, of reconfc mending the conference to adopt a hu» of action that would prove disappointing to all concerned, they urged "the workwi to so organise industrially and politieW upon a class basis that they would w able to supplant the present unscientifi* system of distributing the necesaariw of life with a system of national dew* cratic ownership, that could alone remold the anomaly complained of. Mr. Schofield (Auckland), one of .tt» committee drafting the report, said w>e condition existed in every country. iW England you could buy American machinery cheaper than in America, and, vice versa. It was the natural conaoquence of capitalistic enterprise, and reconstruction of production was nece>" sary. The report was adopted without fat ther discussion. '■■ i;
