CONCILIATION.
THE GARDENERS' DISPUTE. A PARTIAL. SETTLEMENT. After a three days' sitting of the Conciation Council, under the presidency of thfi Commissioner (Mr T. Harks Giles), a partial settlement of the dispute between the nursery and landscape garden' ers and employers was arrived at today. The following clauses were agreed upon: —Clauses relating to no deduction from weekly wages, though time lost or for holidays other than through the workers' own default, sickness or through cessation of works over which the employer has no control; payment of wages, in which provision is made that wages shall be parid weekly or fortnightly, except in cases where present premises of the employer are situated more than five miles from any bank (or branch bank), wages may be paid at intervals of not more than four weeks as may be mutually agreed upon between the employer and his worker. Clauses relating fco holidays, suburban work, country work, terms of engagement and scope of award were satisfactorily adjusted. The main issues, relating to hours ot work, wages, and apprentices, preference, etc., although exhaustively and amicably considered, were referred to the Court, as no satisfactory agreement could be arrived at on these points. The assessors for both the employers and the workers bore testimony to the impartial and thoroughly unbiased way in which the ConunissiorwT conducted the proceedings, and on the motion of Mr D. A. Hay (seconded by Mr G-. W. ■Shipton), a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mr Giles. In acknowledging the vote of confidence, the Commissioner referred to the fact that although no complete settlement had been arrived at. the representatives for the workers and employers respectively (Messrs C. Grosvener and J- F. Catley) were to be conirratnlated upon the fair and reasonable way in which they placed their side of the question before the CounciL The next case to come 'before the Conciliation Council wfll be the Auckland Tinsmith and 6heet-inetal workers, on Tuesday next, followed on Thursday by the Auckland Drivers' dispute.
