EDUCATION BOARD.

a meeting of the Auckland Education Board was held to-day, when there were I present:—Messrs G. J. Garland (chairman), l J. D. McKenzie, A. R. Harris, E. C Banks, G. Edgecombe, G. W. Murray, A. J. Farmer, C. Bsrriball. The Chairman welcomed Messrs McKenzie, Edgecumbe, and Banks, the two former having been re-elected, and the latter a new member. TEACHERS' APPOINTMENTS. The Board decided that a certificated assistant could not be appointed to Komata school; that .applications be Invited from male teachers for Mataital, Ness Valley, and Te Pahi schools, and that tbe following appointments be made: Parawai school, W. J. Weriiham, headmaster; Rukuhla. Miss B. Weeks, teacher; Oruaiti, Miss E. Hawkes; Te Wbetu, C. F. Walker; Waihl South, Miss C. A. F. Murray, assistant; Aka Aka, Miss C. C. Worshop; and Remuera, Miss A. S. Cumming, temporary assistant, TEACHERS 1 PHYSICAL CULTURE. The offer of Mr Milnes, of the Training College, to hold classes on Saturday mornings for instruction of teachers in physical culture, -was accepted with thanks. ELECTION OF CHAIRMAN. Mr Garland vacated the chair, and Mr Crowe presided pending the election of a chairman. Mr .Edgecumbe 'moved that Mr Garland be re-elected, remarking that during the four «•**"■> that gentleman had occupied the chair Be conducted the proceedings with dignity and respect. Mr .Harris seconded the motion, and Mr Garland was re-elected without opposition. Mr Garland said his idea as ehairmnn was to "ibe Just, first." At the next meeting he proposed *o lay before Che members a financial policy for the ensuing year. It was time the Board began to call a halt in the matter of expenditure. He would also have something to bring forward in matters connected with the Technical College aDd the Inspectors' staff. Mr Garland mentioned there were now 520 schools under the Board, and 1056 teachers, so the position of chairman was no sinecure. INSPECTION OF SCHOOLS. It ■was agreed that arrangements .be made by Mr M. Priestly, organising Inspector, to assist temporarily in the inspection of schools until the end of the present year. FREE CLASS BOOKS. Mr. Donaldson also asked if the Board could increase the area,of ground for the school. An additional three acres was asked for by the deputation. CHOOSING A TEACHEH. A protest was received from the Parawai School Committee regarding a teacher having heen appointed without due consultation The letter stated the action of the board would be opposed in every legal way. The chairman (Mr <;. J. Garland) said the Board had the opinion of the Attorney-General, that the Hoard was not bound to Invite applications, and need not send in more thau one name to the committee. The Board invited applications in this cast* lie thooght.lt would be well to point out to the Committee that the Board had a grading scheme which was working very satisfactorily. The teacher sent to Parawai was the highest on the list. Mr. Farmer said it was ridiculous to send one name only, and ask the Committee's opinlou regarding that teacher. Mr. McKenzie saJd the Committee could state any objections they had to the teacher nominated.

I? was decided, on the motion of Mr. Harris, that the whole matter he duly explained to the members of the Parawai Committee. MISCELLANEOUS. Frankton—The Minister notified a grant of £740 for a school at Fraukton. It was agreed to get plans. Hamilton West.—A grant of £S2B having been made by the Minister, It was agreed to have plans prepared. Orey Lynn.—As accommodation Is required for another GO to 70 scholars at the new school at Orey Lynn, the Board agreed to ask the Minister for a grant. Ngawaro. An application for a new school was declined. Te Pu. —'It was agreed that Lf a be •provided, a half-time school be established at Te Pn. Rotorua. It was decided to ask Mr. Oreensladc, M.P., to see the Minister re a grant for a small school building. Ruakaka.—The Gum Diggers' Association applied for a school at I.**\ver Ruaknka. The matter was referred to the Inspector to. report.
