AMUSEMENTS.

OPERA HOUSE. " The change of programme at the Opera House last night attracted a good attendance, and the items presented met with general appreciation. The principal turn was that provided by Starr and Leslie, direct from England, who made their first appearance in New Zealand. They commence with a bit of humour, the lady sings very effectively, and then Starr tosses miniature clnbs about iu a surprising manner, and, without any break in the movements, the pair transfer the objects in a most clever manner. ' The performers were enthusiastically applauded, and bowed acknowledgments about fifteen times before the audience was satisfied. The Rosebuds made their reappearance, and contributed gome excellent turns. Watts and Lucas repeated clever contortion feats and dancing, Hiss Essie Jennings scored with vocal efforts, Nellie Power. Keldine and Klimo, Delwyn and Tye, Colin Cameron, Ruby Wallace, Cel Delwyn, Little Willie, and Bob Lloyd all assisted with the entertainment. The programme will be repeated this evening. FULLER'S PICTURES. The change of programme at the King's Theatre last evening was witnessed by a large and appreciative audience. A very fine coloured picture was that showing the Gorges Dn Loup, and the Glm was one of great scenic beauty. "Scenes In Bonnie Scotland" was the title of another fine travel picture. "The Royal Ascot, 1909," was a splendid reproduction of the scenes at Ascot, including a bird'w-cye view of the whole course. "How Bella Was Won" was a good scene from Dickens' story, and "A Republican's Marriage" was an interesting tale of the French Revolution. A very Interesting comedy-drama was that entitled "The Braggart," in which a live and welltrained puma plays an important pnrt ; "Madame Rex." "Tn Volcanic Country. "How Her Words Camp True." "Meran and Its Surroundings. "The Voice of the Violin," and "Teddy's Three Duels' were other good pictures which went to make a very fine programme. There will be a repetition this evening. WEST'S PICTURES. The launch of 11.M.5. New Zealand was shown for the first time at the Royal Albert Hall last evening. Sir Joseph and Lady Ward arc easily recognised, and the audience loudly applauded the picture The rerun luder of the programme wag In every way excellent, and will be repeated tonight. SOCSA'S BAND. The local representatives of the band received a wire from Wellington tills morning stating that Sousa and his band had a great reception on their opening performance In the Town Hall, the big building being packed to the doors. In addition to the "sixty performers Jn the band. Sousa brings with him three star soloists — soprano, violinist, and eornetls<t. The soprano, Mlps Virginia Root, has a magnificent quality of voice, and the violinist, Mips Nicnlinl SSedeter. Is a big favourite In America, and has been the recipient of flattering notices from Australian critics. The solo cornet. Sir. Herl>ert L. Clarke. Is considered to he the finest cornet player In America. His items are onite a feaiture of the Sousa programmes. The box plan for the lAuckland season at tlie Opera House opens nt WlMronn and Arey's on Thursday, nnd -after playing an early matinee at Hamilton on Wednesday. 23rd, the band opens here the same evening. STEWART'S TICTUBES. The new programme at the Tlvoll Theatre. Newton, was much enjoyed hy a lanre audience last evening. A repetition will be given to-night. STAI? PICTURES. A large audience nirstn assembled at the Newmnrket Public Hall last evening, nnd the animated pictures were keenly enjoyed. THE RINKS. There were, ns usual, large attendances nt the Royal Roller Rink sessions yesterday. A Geisha night Is announced to take place at the Windsor Rink on August 10. The Prince's Rink management announce a "grand rally night" for this evening. The Glldeaway Rink still continues a popular skating resort. The usual sessions take place to-«ay.
