EAST CAPE SETTLEMENT.
WHAKEKAHIKA BLOCK(By Telegraph. -PaiTramentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Friday. Speaking in the House recently Mr W D S Ma-cdonald referred to the progress'of native land settlement on the East Coast. . Questioned on the subject to-day the member for the Bay of Plenty stated that the Native Land Court had just recently approved of eight leases in connection with the settlement of the Whare-kahika Block at Hicks Bay, a block of 45,000 acres. They were no* waiting for the subdivision and survey l of access and roads to the various sections There would probably be a mam road up the Wh&rekahika river Thfc Survey Department was instructing Mr Farnie, the surveyor, to proceed with these surveys, and as soon as he returned to the field, about the beginning of next month, every possible effort would be mnde to expediate thp survey operations. It was hoped that they would be able to «ot up a special sitting of the Court 1 shortly to go into the subdivision of thop* areas. Tt was the intention of the Department to push on with the cuttine- up nnd subdivision process to enable settlers crnin? ou with improvements.
