THE KOHN BURGLARY.
EXTRADITION PROCEEDINGS. At San Francisco in April Val. Turner (alias William Rogers) and Maud Rogers (alias Phillips) were arrested on a charge of having stolen ft large amount of jewellery from the shop of Mr. Kohn, jeweller, Auckland, in March. The rob* bery took place between the time of closing on the afternoon of Saturday, March 18, and the time of opening the following Monday morning, when the window shef-, ves and counter cases were found to have been stripped of jewels to the value ol over £SOO. Turner and Rogers were apprehended in San Francisco in consequence of certain pawnbroking operations, and a considerable amount of jeweller 3' was found in their possession. A couple of months ago Detective Scott, of Auckland, left for San Francisco, in order to arrange for the extradition of the accused and the recovery of as much aa possible of tbe loot. From the time consumed in the process it is evident that the prisoners have contested the issue of extradition papers, but yesterday Inspector Cullen received word that the San Francisco Courts had sanctioned the extradition, which now required only the issue of the President's warrant. It i» mentioned in the message that the prisoners threaten to apply to the High Court for a writ of habeas corpus. Should this stop not be taken Detective Scott will probably leave San Francisco with the prisoners by the steamer Aorangi on 23rd inst.. due at Wellington on lttft September. It is intimated that the recovered jewellery, together with the sum of 400 dollars, have been handed over_» the detective. It may be mentioned thai though it will not be known tnl tM detective's return exactly how much ct the mifsinsr jewellery has been recovered, or Hie exact identity of the prisoners, It has been definitely ascertained that the latter are not identical with the member* o. a side show company which wa.s .n Auckland at the time of the burglary.
