WELUNGTOK, this day.
Christehurch papers received to-day state that consequent on rain a.nl unusually high tides, the rirer Avon overflowed its banks as far as Barwood. Other rivers were flooded, and at Darfield water wa-s flowing into the township between Waddingion and Springfield. Twenty telegraph poles were down. and it was feared that further inland wires were very seriously damaged. Several trains had been delayed a considerable time through washouts and slips. Twelve inches of rain had fallen on Banks Peninsula since Saturday night.
At Oxford a foot of snow had fallen on tbe lower lands, and a heavier fall at higher altitudes.
