REMITTANCE MAN'S END.
DIES IN GAOL. Arthur John Charles Sta-nfield, a remittance man, 47 years of age, died in the Mount Eden Gaol at an early hour this morning. Stanfleld was arrested on Wednesday evening "last, in enclosed premises at Newmarket, where he had wandered without excuse. On Thursday he was charged with being a vagrant, and was remanded', on the application of the police, for a week to give him an opportunity of getting an over-indulgence of drink out of his system. Deceased was a man well connected in the Old Country, his native place being Wakefiel-d, Yorkshire. At one time he practised as a solicitor in England, and his father
is said to be now practising in the same profession in Berlin. Drink has been deceased's trouble. An inquest will be held in the gaol at 10 o'clock on Monday.
