FREIGHTS TO GISBORNE.

OFFER BY THE UNION COMPANY. The chairman of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce (Mr. Leo Myers) yesterday afternoon received a letter from the local office of tiie Union S.S. Company announcing certain improvements which the company intended to make in the Auckland-Gisborne cargo service.

The letter states that the company proposes to replace the s.s. Squall next month with a larger vessel, and that the s.s. Haupiri, trading on the East Coast, will henceforth call at Gisborne, as she is now able to work the river. ' The letter expresses the opinion that with a service every four or five, days by the new steamer, together with the facilities afforded by the Hanpiri, should meet tho requirements of Auckland merchants. The freight by the new vessel and by the Haupiri will be 12/6 a ton, and by the company's two mail steamers 17/6 a ton.

It is also remarked that in the past the company has found that consignors prefer to ship goods to Gisborne by small steamers, which can enter the inner harbour and thus obviate the risk, delay, and expense of lightering, as well as the risk of overcarriage when the roadstead is unworkable. The position is being discussed at a meeting of merchants and others interested at the Chamber of Commerce this afternoon.
