The Bookfellow.
Written for the Auckland Star by A. G. Stephens. HALF SEAS OVER. ".Half seas over" I was born, Swashing through the Spanish main On a dull October morn (And the old man "Drunk again!"). "Half seas over!" Blissful state! Master, too's'n, cook, and mate, Don't know Singapore from Dover, And don't care—when "half seas over." "Half seas over": on my back— Ether mask upon my face, Whitened ceiling turning black, What care I for time or place; "Half seas over': state sublime! All is recklessness and rhyme; Thank the gods and Mr Clover, That have sent mc "half seas over"! "Half seas over"! When I dio All I ask of you, my dear, Is to kiss mc where I lie, And my soul shall know no fear. "Half seas over" I shall see All at last is well with mc; Though I've ever been a rover, Kiss mc, when I'm-"half seas over." S.A. C. H. SOUTER.
