THE DAY OF REST. „ , „ , — San Francisco Bulletin."
THE PREMIER CITY. Ten years ago Melbourne's population was ahead of Sydney's—by a little over 3000. Now Sydney is ahead of Melbourne by nearly 46,000. Melbourne's population was in 1901 496,079; it is now 591,830. It has gone up, that is, by 95,751 in the 10 years. By about 20 per cent., that is, as against Sydney's almost 30 per cent increase.—"Daily Telegraph," Sydney. Sydney: "Hullo, sonny! What's all this talk of yours about being the first city in Australia!"
Mr. Asquith: "Come on, Billee, my boy, we'll get through if we have strength to persevere."—"Newcastle Chronicle."
IN THE NEAR FUTURE. A deputation of women asked the Minister for Labour to appoint two women to assist the judge to inquire into women's work and wages.—"Evening News," Sydney.
POUCHED. THE SMALLER KANGAROO: "REALLY, THIS IS A GREAT IDEA!" By the adoption of the "Kangaroo" closure the Government are enabled to jump over awkward amendments to the Parliament Bill which would otherwise have to be faced. "The kangaroo is an animal that gains is propulsive power from its tail."—"Pall Mall Gazette."
