POLITICS AND DIVORCE.
An Act passed almost unnoticed by the Pennsylvania Legislature in April empowering a judge to deny any application for the trial by jury of divorce proceedings is be* ing bitterly attacked as special legislation adopted at the behest of Mr. Andrew Mellon, a millionaire of Pittsburg, -who is being sued for divorce by his wife, formerly Miss Nora McMullen, of Hertford, England. The effect of the Act is to render the divorce proceedings secret. Counter suits for divorce have long been pending between the husband and wife. Mrs. Mellon, fearing the great political influence of her husband, ihad applied for a trial before a jury when the Legislature suddenly passed the A£t in qnestion. Mrs. Mellon declares that her wealthy husband's influence inspired it, and is appealing to the women of Pennsylvania to agitate for ita repeal. Mrs Mellon recently obtained a separation from her husband, with the custody of the children and a liberal allowance lor their maintenance.
