VICTORIAN FLOODS.
BIG AREA SUBMERGED. MELBOURNE, June 21. The floods continue in various parts of Victoria. Numerous landslides and washaways have occurred, and railway ■communication is badly interrupted. Healesville is .partly submerged, and several residents have vacated their houses. At Cora Lynn a resident took a horse and some cows into his house to save them from drowning. Another resident shared his dwelling for several days with 30 pigs. ...-,._; !..-.... A tramp camped on the Sank of a creek at Maldon is missing. His effects were found covered with mud and debris , .
At Warburton the river is over a mile j! wide, and all sorts of articles are floating down streaxn. - !* All the rivers in Eastern Gippsland are j in Ugh flood. ° Coffin-bearers in a country town walked with •water above their waists to the s hearse. The hearse was bogged, and they were unable to extricate it. Another * vehicle was obtained. t MANY FARMERS RUINED. j t SETTLERS ESCAPE IN BOATS. c . a (Received 10.50 a.m.) t MELBOURNE, this day. ( A heavy gale raged in the city yester- 6 day morning, accompanied by sleet, occa- j sional snow and rain. Since January the highest rainfall for six months has been ; recorded. Thousands of acres are flooded in the Nathalia district, and many crops have been destroyed by ■water round Kotupna, and the residents have been compelled to leave their houses. Many farmers are ruined. Boats have been sent to Shepparton to assist the settlers. The waters are still j spreading. The floods at Warburton are the most disastrous on record. |
