DEFENCE NOTES.

On Coronation Day a salute of 101 guns wIU be fired by the Permanent Force from North Shore, commencing at 12 noon.

It is gazetted that Lieut. A. J. Moody has been transferred from the N.Z. Garrison Artillery to the N.Z. Field Artillery.

The tenth annual ball of the Auckland Garrison Non-commissioned Officers' Cub will he held in the Society of Arts building, Coburg-street, on Friday, July 14th.

When addressing the Clsbornc troops during his recent visit, Major-Genera 1 Godley said he considered the mounted men had the best lot of horses he had seen in New Zealand. The squadron mustered 61 strong.

The extended tjme allowed for registration under the new territorial scheme ends on Saturday. Up to last evening 2029 territorials had registered, and 37D1 senior cadets. This number does not include territorials at present serving.

Colonel G. C. B. Wolfe, officer-command-ing Auckland military district, left yesterday for Hamilton, to inspect the Fourth (Waikato) Mounted Rifles, who are at present in camp at New-stead. Colonel Godley Is also attending the camp. The camp breaks up on Sunday.

Appointments of territorial officers have been gazetted as follows:—Wm. L. Ranstead, to be second lieutenant 4th (Waikato) Mounted Rifles: XV. L. Titchener, to be second lieutenant "A" Battery (Auckland) N.Z. Field Artillery; G. N. Hill, L. G. Ashton, and R. C. Berkeley, to be second lieutenants of the 3rd (Auckland) Regiment.

The Officer Commanding the District has been pleased to approve that the undermentioned officers of the 3rd Regiment Auckland Infantry be transferred as under, from the Ist inst.:—Capt. J. P. Stevenson, for duty as Major to the 15th Regiment Auckland Infantry; Captain R. XV. Cumming, fnr duty as Major to the 16th Regiment Auckland Infantry.

The following troops of the Auckland Garrison will comprise the infantry brigades at the ceremonial parade on the Domain on the 22nrt inst., with their respective brigadiers:—No. 1 Brigade: Commander, Colonel C. T. Major, D.S.O. All adult corps except Field Artillery. No. 2 Brigade: Commander, Lieut.-Colonci A. Bartlett. All senior Cadets and Boy Scouts. No. 3 Brigade: All Junior Cadets.

A district order Issued states that the brigadiers, also the O.C. Division Garrison Artillery, will arrange classes lor instruction during the evenings for officers and noncommissioned officers of the Territorial force, at all centres of their respective commands where such officers and N.C.O.'s can be got together. All permanent adjutants and sergeant-major Instructors will he available for these classes, and will make It known to all Territorial officers and men where soch classes are held, impressing upon them the necessity of attending same.

The order of precedence of officers in New Zealand is as follows: —Officers of His Majesty's Imperial Regular Forces serving in the Dominion, if holding local rank conferred by the Governor, will rank with officers ot the Staff Corps and Permanent Force according to the date of their local rank. If serving iv the Dominion in the rank granted by the King, they will rank as senior to all officers of the New Zealand Military Forces of that rank. Officers of the Staff Corps and Permanent Force will take precedence of all Territorial officers of the same rank.

In connection with the church parade before the military parade on June 22, Coronation Day, rifles will not be taken inside the respective churches attended by the troops, but will be dealt wlth_as follows- — Troops attending St. Mary's. Parnell, will on arrival at the church place their rifles by companies In the church-room. In the event of this room not affording enfficient accommodation for all the rifles, companies not so accommodated will pile arms in the church grounds. Troops' attending St. Patrick's, St. Matthew's, and St Paul's will pile arms, and leave tnem at "the Drill Hall. Troops attending Graf-ton-road "Wesleyan and Khyber Pass Presbyterian Churches will pile their arms in the church grounds respectively. A sentry from each company piling arms will be Pijfea on dntv over the company's arms. O.C. units will be responsible that this ir carried out.
