A SHORTER ROAD TO MORRINSVILLE.

(To the Editor.) ®r,—Now that the motor car has come to etay, and travelling has a luxury as well as a necessity, the question of improving the routes should go hand in hand with the system of travelling. Now, sir, the distance from Morrinsville to Auckland is approximate, ly 105 miles by travelling the Great South-road, and in this route there are some.very steep and rugged country to negotiate 'between Pokeno and Drury. A better and shorter route can be got by going from Morrinsville, via Maungatawhiri and Hunua. This route is comparatively level, and would shorten the distance about 20 miles. A very large portion of this road is made at present, but each local body along the route seems to think it ie not its business to Urge the complete route; It may be that they are afraid of bringing through their districts traffic which does not directly contribute to the upkeep of the road, or it may toe sheer indifference to the welfare of the general community. If it is the former then the quicker these men give way to men of more progressive views the Ibetter for the Dominion, and if the latter, then this letter may rouse them to actloJl. A word to the wise, efc. In addition to ebortening the route and providing a better route than the present one, it would have the effect of opening tip the country. I think a very good plan would .be for the local (bodies along this route to form themselves into a committee, go over the ground, and collect all the data, then approach the Government for assistance. Being a question of public importance, the Government •have a right to assist.—l am, etc., J. T. STBMBRIPGE. Hunua, 31et March.
