THE STORM.
HEAVY GALE ON COAST.
I ' SHIPPING DELATED.
A heavy easterly to north-easterly gale .blew all day yesterday, freshening during the evening, J>ut later in the night heavy rain commenced to fall, and the ■wind abated in violence. No shipping casualties are reported, but unless the weather improves considerably the Northern Steamship Company's vessels, most of which happen to be in Auckland, will not leave at their scheduled sailing hours this afternoon and evening. A similar gale, with thick weather, is reported from Manukau Heads. A yachting mishap, which resulted in the death of one man, .occurred in Huia Bay, .but all other small craft are saie. The baT is smooth. The rainfall yesterday_,_as observed in the Albert Park, was .03 inch, and up till 9.30 this morning .77 inch.
ROUGH TRIP OF THE WIMMERA.
The Hoddart Parker Cto.'e steamer Wimmera, -which airrived from Sydney last night, experienced exceptionally bad weather all the way across the Taeman Sea. The steamer had 120 passengers on 'board, and by one and all the trip was voted a decidedly unconnfor.ta.ble one. When the Wimmera cleared Sydney Heads on Wednesday aftestaoon last, she ran into thick "unpromising weather. On Thursday morning the Wimmera encountered a (heavy norfli-cast gale, with high seas. The ship took on board a considerable quantity of -water, btcfc no damage was sustained. Gopious rain , , which ■fell continuously, added to the unpleasantness of the" trip. The sun was obscured on Uriday, and no observations were made that day. Another gale sprang up on Saturday, when the vessel was nearing the New Zealand coast, and late that night tfhe Three Kings were abeam, but could not be made out in the thick w«aSier. The first land sighted ■was Gaipe Maria Van Diemen, which was passed at 3 a.m. yesterday. Boisterous weather prevailed on the run down. t!he coast, but the vessel made good headway, and pa«B«d Ca-pe Brett at 11.45 a.m., and made the anchorage in the harbour at 7.415 p.m. The time occupied on the voyage was 4 days 6 hours, which speaks well for the seagoing qualities of tSie Wimmera. In the opinion of nautical mten, itlhe Victoria leaving for Sydney this evening •will have a bad time of it for the frrst fifteen or sixteen 'hours, but after ifihat, when s!he has the New Zealand coast astern, sht ehould make a more comfortable passage, as she frill lhare the gale behind her.
STEAMERS DELAYED.
In consequence of the "bad weather on the coast, the sailing of several of the Northern Company's steamers were postponed this afternoon. The Waiotahi's trip to Mercury Bay to-day has heett abandoned, and" she will not sail now until Friday. The Apanul's sailing for Whangaroa, Mongonui, Waiharaliara, Ohoura, and Awanui has been postponed until 9 a.m. to-morrow. The Paeroa will not leave for etc., until to-morrow night, and the Aupouri's Bailing for Tauranga has been postponed till two p.m. to-morrow.
