CONSERVATORIUM OF MUSIC.
PROPOSED ESTABLISHMENT AT AUCBXAND. . (By Telegraph.--Press Awsocittlon.) CHRISTCHUBCH, Friday. The University Senate *o-day received a report from the Music Committee regarding the establishment of a conservatorium of music. The committee reported as follows:—(1) The committee, as directed by a resolution of the Senate, communicated with the affiliated colleges to ascertain what encouragement they or any of them would give to the establishment of a conservatflrium of music. Th« Auckland University College is the only college that replied definitely, and submitted to the committee a practicable scheme with gratifying offers of encouragement. (2) The scheme submitted by the Auckland University College for the establishment of a conservatorium of music merits a subsidy from the' Government, and that the Senate recommends its 'establishment at Auckland. (3) The committee recommend: "That the Music Committee be a Recess Committee, with power to confer with the Auckland University College as to further details of the scheme." Mr. L. Cohen, who moved the adoption of the report, explained that the Auckland University College had acquired the Choral Hall, and it was proposed 'to 'turn it into a conservatorium of music. There was already an organ in the hall. It •was proposed at first to appoint five professors, and there would be complete courses arranged in practice and theory. It was hoped that in a year or two the conservatorium would be self-supporting. Tie committee felt that the scheme was an adequate one, and were thoroughly justified in making the recommendation ■to the Senate. It was felt that the conservatorium once established at Auckland would never 'be allowed to die, but would expand and flourish. Sir G. Maurice O'Rorke said 'there was no desire at A-uckland to monopolise the teaching of musks, and he hoped to see similar conservatoriums established in connection. with the other university colleges. After a short discussion the Senate approved of the report.
