Stewart, of Hinds, was cmsned to death yesterday afternoon iby an iron roller, under which she fell. Mr. Clement Wragge advocates the establishment of a public observatory in Auckland, to be opened each evening tor the benefit of the people. A verdict of death from syncope, caused toy an epileptic seizure, was returned at the inquest on fche body of the Waihi hairdresser Geo. W. Smart. The N«w Zealand Athletic Council has decided to forward tne appeal in connection with D. Wilson's three-mile record to the Australasia Union. Tommy Burns announces that he has ■retired from the prize ring and haa turned over his fight dates to Jack Lester, whom he picks as the champion. The Napier Borough Council accepted the offer of Mrs: Randall of a te-atre site for £6500. The property is 2} acres in extent, and is situated in the heart of the town. At Palnierston North yesterday John Cyril Weller, bookmaker and billiardroom proprietor, of Foxton, was fined £10 for betting with an infant, and flO for laying tote odds. Unionist newspapers express satisfaction' with Saturday's polls, while the Liberal Press . asserts that a crushing blow has been dealt to the pro-peer end foodjtaxing party. -. The Mt. Albert Road Board last night passed a vote of thanks to the Premier and the Hon. D. Buddo for their efforts in pushing through., the Public Health Amendment Act. -Mies Dufaur, an Australian, accompanied by two guides, has returned to the Hermitage, after achieving the ascent of Mt. Cook. Miss Dufaur is the first lady to conquer this mountain. She made the ascent in sis hours 20 minutes from-the Bivouac. A sub-committee recommended to the Court of Convocation of the Middle University District last niglit that a Royal Commission be appointed to take evidence and recommend such changes a3 •will give the Dominion a modem and efficient university system. The recommendation "was adopted. The population of Greater London for 1909 is estimated at 7,537,196, an increase of 107,456 over 1908. There are 18,000 police in the administrative county, and in the twelve months mentioned they apprehended 109,787 persons. Licenses were granted for 194 kinematograph theatres, a number which indicates a new development of the public taste in entertainment. An inquest was opened yesterday afternoon, before the Coroner (Mr. T. Gresham) at the, deceased's residence, touching the death of James H. E. A. Myers, who met his death tinder tragic circumstances yesterday morning. In order that a postmortem examination might be made, and an analysis of the box of powders irom which deceased drank, the inquest was adjourned to the 20th inst.
