SEAMEN'S ISBTITGTB. A very pleasant evening vru spent at tie Seamen's Institute, O'C'onnell-street, last night. A number of songs, with. boUi piano and organ accompaniment, were given by Mr. and Mrs. Madden, with their Uttle girL These were greatly appreciated, and received eitremely hearty applause. Mr. Brown (a sailor) sanaseveral naval songs which pleased the audience very much. Mj-s. Williams acted as accompanist. Tea was served as usual, and the Mlasioner (Afcr. A. P. Cowiel presided. BERESFORD-STRHET CON<JKBGATIONAL SUNDAY SCHOOL. In order to raise funds for the modernisation ot floe Sunday-school of the Bereefordstreet Congegatlonal Church, an exhibition and carnival Is being, held In the schoolroom, the opening ceremony being performed yesterday evening by the Rev. Steele Craik. The competitions lnclnde fancy work, eewing, cooking, drawing, photography, woodwork, etc, and are well contested. Among the objects for exhibition are some fine sped- : mens of kauri gam, lent by Mr. K. Bond, a nice bit of Maori carving be- : Longing to Mr. Cheal, and many i other things relating to tbe Do- ' minion. The various stalls did good boat- i nets daring the evening, among the most ; popular attractions being the e£ooting gallery, end a valuable art was a splendid attendance last night, and the exhibition will be continued to-day and - to-morrow. . The tea and public meeting in connection < •with the anniversary celebrations of the ) Devonport Methodist Sunday-school were , (held In the schoolroom last evening, and proved very sncctswful. There was a large j lattendance at the tea, and the arrange- j ments in this connection reflect great credit , on the committee. Tiiere was a record J gathering at the public meeting, and Bey. , W. H. Beck presided. He briefly addressed , the meeting, emphasing the good work of . the school, and dwelling on the progress ot , the past year. The annual report, present- ' ed by Mr R. .1. Clark, wae very encourag- , ing, and congratulated the echool on the . ppogreas accompfished. Mr H. Wilding, , sen., read the financial statement, which i showed that the funds of the school were . in a satisfactory state. Spry; dialogue, "Miss Slim's Afternoon at Home," by eight, girls; children* chorus, "The Dolls"; children's action song, "Helping Mother"; recitation, 'The Flowers," by eight ladies; vocal solo, Mr Phillips; display by Mr X Sutheiland'e class; quartet, "Nearer," Glee Club.
