DATE OF THE ELECTION.
EQUAL POLITICAL RIGHTS. LIBERAL DETERMINATION. (By Cable. —Press Association.—Copyright.) LONDON, November 15. The statement which it was expected Mr. Asquith would make to-day, as to the Government's intentions, has 'been postponed till Wednesday. The Government are abandoning their bills in both Houses, including the Budget. It is expected that writs will be issued on the 28th inst., enabling the large towns to vote before December 8, and the majority of rural districts "before the 17th, thus doing the least harm to Christmas shopping. The London and Suburban Traders' Federation has petitioned Mr. Asquith to postpone the elections till after Christmas. Lord Knollys yesterday had a prolonged interview with Mr. Asquith, who visits the King to-day. Mr. Churchill, in a letter to his constituents, says that the Conservatives seek, whether they are in office or in opposition, to remain in possession of the all-powerful veto, which can be used to harass, damage, and finally dissolve any Government they dislike. The Liberals had long claimed equal political rights in the Constitution, and were now going to take them. Mr. Bonar Law, speaking at the Constitutional Club, regretted the failure of the Veto Conference. The Liberals professed that they did not want a single Chamber. The Unionists meant the reform of the Lords to be a real reform, and they were not satisfied with an Upper Chamber entirely hereditary, but the factions represented by Mr. Keir Hardie and Mr. Redmond made a settlement of the question impossible. The "Manchester Guardian 7, states that Mr. Asquith has received strong representations against the reversal of the Osborne judgment from Scottish Liberals.
