LOS ANGELOS WINS STEAD MEMORIAL cur. ; (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") SOCKBL'RX, Saturday. The weather saw the racing carnival through in great style, the day being the most brilliant of the whole week. A bright sun was tempered by a very geiKle breeze, aud altogether the conditions were nothing short of ideal. Even after six days of racing on end, tie public were not ready to cry enough, aud the attendance was again large. There was brisk speculation on the opening eveu't, the Port Cooper Hurdles, in which a good field of ten weut out. Aorangi, Coy and Gold Bird were all disputing favouritism until the machine closed, when Hold Bird reached the top of the list, Aoraugi being just better supported thau Coy. The lavuurite was always well placed, and ran a better race than on the tirst or second day, but Aorangi showed no more dash than before, though he put up a good performance under his substantial burden. Stone Ginger ran prominently for a mile, and Ked King was also gong well up to 'the came point. Four scratchiug-3 left a dozen in the Crossy "Welter, and the public thought noihing better than the Juvenile Plate winner, Sunburnt. Gipsy Belle, which just missed on the second day, when she registered a good performance, was a good second favourite, and iJalaclavu, Humming Bird and Federal all had uiauy friends. San Severo was as disappointing as before, getting off very badly, but Gipsy Belle hopped off smartly, and, galloping in great style, the Porirua-owued niare never gave anything else a chance. Sunburnt was unlucky getting away at the tail end of a bunch, and, 'though he looked like coming through when the straight 'Was reached, he could make no impression on the leaders. This, of course, was not to be wondered at, when the winner cut out the sis furlongs in 1.14. The Seymour Handicap, a nuck race, brought out the tine held of sixteen, of which Kilts aud Armstrong had winning form at the meeting to recommend them, and the former was sent out a good favourite. Dlreetoire, Guianforte, Elfish, and the bracketed Flambeau and lzdubar followed In close order. The favonrite ran prominently all through, Acuray being with him until well into the straight, when Flambeau, Izdubar and Dlrectnire joined in. At the distance there was a fine straggle, Flambeau beating the favourite by half a length, with Dlrectnire a head away, only half a head in front of Izdubar. Both the winner and izdubar were bred by Mr. J. B. Reid, and the former is leased to Mr. F. 11. Pyne. Wiuimera, Countermine and San Severo were withdrawn from the Members' Handicap, one of the <-hicf sprint events of the meeting, leaving nine to go out. The Stewards , winner. EXiultas, was made a very strong favourite. Kormby, which ran a good rare behind Madam Madcap, ou Wednesday, was a better choice than Miss Mischief, 'but. altogether, it was a good betting race, Tribulation being the outsider. Theodore was quickest to begin, and he and the favourite led to the distance, where Sharp-s-hooter ran un on the inside, and. gfllug un, won easily in fast time. Theodore lasted iong enough to beat Genius, which was Just in front of fhp Auckland owned Wauchope and. Miss Mischief. The winner, which is a full brother to the brilliant Signalman of other days, ran a poor race in the Welter on Wednesday, and was a much better horse to-day. Duly five moderate two-year-olds were saddled up for the I'ioneer Handicap, which provided a very poor race, the Obligado—Kitiroa colt Orton, which had raced very poorly earlier In tie meeting, winning from end to end in hollow fashion. which was making her first appearance at the meeting, bad no trouble in getting second place from Tnnnhauser, which wns a hot favourite, probably in view of his winning fnrm at Diinedln, but he quite failed to reproduce it at Hicearton. There was a great deal of disappointment when it wns known that Mr. Greenwood's flue colt Danube had been withdrawn from the Stead Memorial Gobi Cup. in which his chance hud heft: strongly favonred. lie was in the sheds on tlie course an hour before the race, when he passed ont. and sot both his hind legs ovor the picket fence. The fence had to be cut away to release him and it was found that the brilliant snn of Martian had cut himself a little, and was sore, so that it -would have been injudicious at least to send him ont to race. His withdrawal left half-a-dozen fine horses in the race, and the bettiug was as spirited as any at the meeting. ! Maori Kinir. Mr Watt's'handsome , Mer rjwre li'/i.ui Qlie?ii lmrse. wns always n liule better supported than the rest, and he finished v.p a Komi favourite, while Madam Madcap, winner of the Jockey Club Handicap on Wednesday, was just a little lic.tTer supported than Los Angeloa. while Prim wus the uext choice. Ingoda got the -worst of the start Los Angelos at once going to the front The big San Francisco gelding. I ridden by Oliver, stayed there all throw*, civing nothing a chance, and won like a racehorse in fa-=t time. Maori King lay a j Inns (vuv out of it at the start, and made iup ground fapt round the top turn, but he I ,'nu!d make no impression on the winner in I the last hundred yards. Madam Madcap evl- ! dently felt the effects of her interrupted pre. i paration. as she wns tiring badly in the run home, l'rim. Ingoda. and Dlauolo finished a rood vra.v back In th.it order. The Randolph Handicap, for -which eleven horses were lined up, was another good betting race. Nanmai finishing up a solid favourite with Perle d'Or. Obsono. and lireaiJless ac next choicer. There was some I trouble -.it the start, but Mr I'iper effected ifi fairly good dispatch, and when they T.i<:i«'d the straight proper Nanmai and ■ S-oTrii Pl.-ild were g"ing well In front, tho . f/.rmer bavine KM oIT as smartly as nsnal. Ascalnn. however finished full of running, ami wDii handsomely. The winner, which is hy Conqueror— Koklrteiri, was fancied by some perple fur the Stewards' Handicap, in ■ which he was never prominent, but h.» jsut uj) a good run to-day.

The last race of the day, the ITendalton : Handicap, run over a mile and α-qnarter, is always a good betting race, and of the thirteen horses sent ont half a dozen were very well supported. Kopu was the actual favourite. Rose Noble, John, and Coroniform being the nest fanciee. Kopn began better than usual, and went out to win all the way, but the field ran in close order, and when they were in the straight all but about three looked to have a good chance. Rose Noble finished with all his customary dash, but could never reach the favourite, while John, which got away worst of the lot, also finished strongly. The Dunedhiowned pair. Adage and Adjudge, and Coroniform, winner of the Otaio Plate, finished close n». The totallsator investments ■were £22,349, making a grand total of £90,142, as against £90,361 last year. Bookmakers' fees totalled £2489. MEMBERS' HANDICAP, 60050t6; Beven furlongs. Sharpshooter. 7.10 1 Theodore, 8.5 _ 2 Genius, 0.7 — . 3 Scratched: Wimmera, Countermine, San Severo. WAIHI HACK RACING CLUB.

The ftnal meetlng of <the Waihi Tlack Club'i •was held in the Hibernian Hall on Saturday | eveping, 'Mr D. Morrow presiding. After the usual routine business had been di*-:' posed of, and accoumts amounting to fltJO passed for payment, the chairman, in complimenting the stewards on the success ofp the meeting, dealt briefly with the Oamlns * I Bill, ami in the course of his remarks said' it wns the Intention of the club to Immediately apply for a pennk to use Ihe totalleator at further meetings. He could not I ccc why the number of racing daye in the ] year should be reduced, seeing that it was I ■purely in the interest ef sport that these ■rnce meetings were organised from year ■to year. He was pleuaed to cay from a'■ \ nna"nctal point of view the recent meeting: 'had been a grent success, amd by tie re-j ports of the police the meeting , was one of khe best conducted in Waiht. I Mr (.i. i'olebrook, in endorsine the re- ' marks of the chairman, said that the clvb 1 ■had made a profit of about £50 on the meet-j 1 Ing. He moved that £10 be donated to thej i Waihi Jockey -Clnb. for the purpose of assisting them to pay off the existing mortsasej, on the grandstand. The motion was car-J ried unanimously. I Mr M. G. r«wer, secretary of the Waihi I Jockey Tlub, who was present, thanked the! Hack Club on behalf of his club for the donation. He hoped the rixkl feeling eubeistlng between the two clubs would continue, and sincerely hoped that the recent legislation on the racing question would m>t; j materially affect racing in Wothi, for they | could ill afford to lose 'two daye' sport in ' I each year, seeing "that residents of Waihi: had.little else to look forward to. The horses Sinn Fein. Waltapu, Parable, I Cheddar. Ireland, Emblem and Star Lass ■were shipped South yesterday nfter their, [efforts at the A.U.C. Spring Meeting. | A. Julian and A. Whtttaker, the most. successful Auckland horsemen on the flat | j and over fences last season, were presented I'by the proprietors of a local newspaper on j Saturday with a handsome whip as a memento of their success.
