Dr. Brenel, director of the Tropical Diseases Institution, is to report on the earth-eating disease, which is prevalent in the Cairns district. A number of children are being treated in the, hospital every week for the disease, which has a permanent blighting influence on their mental and moral development. STRIKES AND COERCION. SYDNEY, August 15. A monster demonstration of welcome to the released strike leaders, Brennan, Burns, Lewis, and Gray, took place at Newcastle to-day. All the district mines were closed, and there was much enthusiasm, strong speeches "being made against the Coercion Act. RISE IN FLOUR. SYDNEY, August 15. The wheat market is very strong. Shippers are offering 4/1 to 4/IJ, but holders want 4/2. As a result of this flour has advanced 10/, and best brands are now quoted at £10. EASTERN PACIFIC SERVICE. SYDNEY, August 15. The local office of the Union Company has been advised that the agreement entered into some time ago with W. D. Spreckels for the passenger and cargo service from Wellington to San Francisco, via Tahiti, has proved so highly encouraging that the service is to be indefinitely continued. RECORD SEASON AHEAD. MELBOURNE, August 15. Crop and wool prospects are excellent, and present indications point to a record season.
