ELECTRIC TRAM EXTENSION.
Owing to the extensions of the electric tram service to Richmond and elsewhere, and also in view of projected extensions, considerable additions have been made to the power station in Hobson-street. T&- main building Iras ben added to until the whole frontage has 'been covered, and a second smoke stack has been put up. A new fuel economiser, consisting of 360 tubes, has been installed, conveyers and overhead bunkers have been constructed capable of holding 700 tons of coal, and a ninth Babcox-Wilcox boiler has been put in. Additions have also been made to the engine plant, in the- shape of a steam alternator, with a- voltage of 5,500, and a 500 kilowatt motor generator. A sub-station has been built at Epsom near the car depot, in which is. installed the 500 kilowatt motor generator. The current ie generated at the main station, and is conveyed to Epsom by two cables, laid on the conduit system as far as Newmarket. At PonsTmby depot the accommodation for the cars has been increased, and upwards of 90 men are employed in the repairing department. A new brick pumping station is in course of construction near the morgue, at the foot of Hobson-street. At the present time eight new cars are being built, which will give accommodation for 500 additional passengers.
