A LYTTELTON HERO.
(Received 8.50 a.m.) LONDON", July 20. The Order of St. John of Jerusalem has issued a certificate of honour to William Hayes, a railway-shunter at Lyttelton, for heroism. The message from London this morning, announcing that a certificate of honour has been awarded to a shunter named Haves at Lyttelton, is about three months out of date, (telegraphs our Christchurch correspondent). It has been in Hayes' possession for a considerable time, and the fact that it had been granted him was announced in the columns of the "Lyttelton Times" last May. The deed -which it recognises was done In April, 1909. A shunter named Williams "was engaged in shunting operations at the Lyttelton station, and he jumped off the first of a string of moving wagons to turn the points, and his foot became fixed in a diamond crossing. He was unable to release himself, and Hayes rushed forward at great personal risk, but was unable to extricate Williams until the first wagon had passed over his legs, and he then drew him clear and undoubtedly saved his life, although Williams lost his right leg and a part of h : = left foot.
